It is with very heavy hearts that we honor the life of Roots of Success student Demetrius Fleming Davis, who died after being struck by a stray bullet in Oakland just a few days before his 19th birthday.

Demetrius was enrolled in the Roots of Success course as part of his internship with Berkeley Youth Alternatives (BYA) Environmental Training Center, working with Roots of Success instructor Sequence Young.

Demetrius was a college student who loved life, loved his friends and family, and loved gardening. BYA staff are planning to rename the garden Demetrius loved in his memory.

BYA’s Green Pathways Program is a garden based internship program for youth ages 14-24. Youth go through the Roots of Success course and work in the garden, learning basic work ethic, professionalism, and skills necessary for future employment. They also grow and distribute fresh food for the West Berkeley community and collaborate with other youth and food justice organizations.
