This June, we had the pleasure of training and welcoming two more instructors into the Roots of Success community. One is Laura Ford, Director of Special Projects at Ecotrust, which is our longtime partner in Portland, Oregon. The other is Sarah Pipping, who works with Oakland Unified School District’s newly opened Central Kitchen, Instructional Farm, and Educational Center. It was a great training, filled with discussions about pedagogy, college credit for Roots of Success students in Oakland, and the new Roots of Success Apprenticeship program!

Ecotrust, with whom we have worked for several years, works to diversify the workforce and advance economic justice in Portland through its Green Workforce Academy, a green jobs training program for young adults of color. Ecotrust does this work in collaboration with The Blueprint Foundation, Native American Youth and Family Center, Self Enhancement, Inc., and Wisdom of the Elders. To learn more about these programs, click here or visit ecotrust.org.

The Oakland Unified School District Central Kitchen, Instructional Farm, and Education Center is the hub of the new district-wide school food program network that connects nutrition, education, and community programs at OUSD’s schools, kitchens, gardens, and produce market stands. Students will get to see professional cooks preparing approximately seven million meals a year for 38,099 school children, work in the kitchen garden, and take Roots of Success classes. To learn more visit ousd.org.
We are so excited to have Laura and Sarah join us as Roots of Success Instructors. Please join us in welcoming them to the ROS community!
